Biography
Dr. A.L. Smith read her first full-length novel (The Boxcar Children, by Gertrude Chandler Warner) in the third grade and it spawned her passion for reading. According to Dr. Smith, the hallmark of a great story is the resounding presence of a character that transcends the final pages of the book.
Angela is a native Louisianan, (Frierson) Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves, a practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, a graduate of Grambling State University, and a former member of the Lady Tigers basketball team. She is the author of an Amazon Best Seller and critically acclaimed novel Behind Closed Doors 2: Dana’s Story. The short film adaptation of the novel, “Dana’s Story” is the recipient of multiple independent film festival awards.
In 2010, she participated in humanitarian relief efforts during the devastating earthquake in Haiti and provided anesthesia services to countless number of victims, many of whom were children. This experience would profoundly impact her views concerning the socioeconomic disparities here in the U.S. and in countries abroad. Her second novel, Behind Closed Doors 2: Dana’s Story, was heavily influenced by her experience in Haiti. Dr. Smith is in the production phase of a documentary film depicting the story of Frierson native Lemon Howard. In 1960, Mr. Howard was wrongfully convicted for the murder of Mary Allen Booth. As a result, he was incarcerated for 42 years. Her goal is to shed light on the injustices of the criminal justice concerning African Americans.
Her third novel, Malicioius Intent, is a medical murder mystery with an urban twist. Inspired by her work as a healthcare provider, the plot is centered on the use of HIV fingerprinting and provides an opportunity for readers to gain insight regarding transmission, mutation, and current innovations in prevention. The anticipated release is spring 2023.
As an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she takes seriously the organization’s motto “Service to all Mankind”.
